Abstract

Improper diet and life style contribute to overweight and obesity in children. The aims of this study were to assess the effect of diet intervention program on body weight of overweight and obese children, assess the effect of diet intervention program and lifestyle changing on body weight of overweight and obese children and assess the effect of a program for diet intervention and lifestyle changing on nutritional knowledge ,behavior and life style of overweight and obese children. A purposive sample of 80 school age children between 6-14 years old was selected to carry out this study. Tools of this study included a structured interview questionnaire that was used to assess nutrition knowledge ,behavior and ,life style assessment sheet and a chart for children’s body mass index. The settings this study was conducted in Shebin EL Kom city ( EL Ahmadia elementary school and El Masaeey preparatory school) and El Sokarya village (Elsokarya elementary and preparatory school). The main findings of the study indicate that children had lower mean weights in study group II after 3 and 6 months( 66.30±8.94 and 65.30±8.8 ) respectively than children in study group I( 65.65±9.05 and 64.95±8.84 ) respectively. Therefore, it was concluded that diet intervention program reduced the body weight of overweight and obese children , diet intervention and lifestyle changing program reduced body weight of overweight and obese children more than only diet intervention. For this reason, it was recommended that health education should be provided to children to limit the intake of junk food, limit television watching and perform physical exercise daily for 30 to 45 minutes.
