Abstract

Chemotherapy is one of most important treatments for human cancers. However, side effects such as intestine dysfunction significantly impaired its clinical efficacy. The mechanism of gastrointestinal toxicity of Amethopterin has not been clarified completely. Therefore cancer chemotherapy has to be accompanied by symptomatic therapy such as anti-biotics and anti-diarrheal drugs. It is important to clarify the mechanism of Amethopterin induced intestinal damage to perform cancer chemotherapy effectively by preventing the side effects. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of L-carnitine on chemotherapy-induced gastrointestinal tract dysfunction in rats. The biochemical, histopathological and immunohistochemical change was examined in the gastrointestinal tract of rat’s adminstrated Amethopterin and l-carnitine.In the current study, 60 male albino rats weighting 150 g ±10g were used as experimental animals. Rats were classified into the following 6 groups.
