Abstract

proper soft-tissue balancing during total kmee arthroplasty (TKA) is paramount to ensure long-term success postoperatively.
the ideal alignment is achieved through soft tissue releases aimed at balancing the collateral ligaments, and by placing the co,mponents in the correct orientation.
Inadequate soft-tissue relase a bout the knee is usually associated with either instability or resource of deformity postoperatively.
however, an overzealous release may produce instability on the contracted side of the joint or an increased flexion space, which may lead to knee instability in flexion with a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)-retaining implant or to dislocation of a posterior stablized total knee as a result of exceeding the jump height of the tibial post (cam) in flexion.
