Abstract

The present study aimed at investigating the effect of Dogme strategy on developing some speaking skills among students majoring in English at El Arish Faculty of Education. The participants of the study consisted of thirty students selected at random from the second year students majoring in English at El Arish Faculty of Education in the academic year 2012/2013. They were randomly assigned into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group (15 students) received training through Dogme strategy. On the other hand, the control group (15 students) received instruction through the regular method of teaching speaking. To determine the most important speaking skills that need to be acquired by the second year students majoring in English at faculties of Education, a questionnaire of speaking skills was designed and approved by a panel of jury. Based on the results of this questionnaire, a test of speaking skills was developed and used as a pre-post test. Fifteen speaking activities were designed by the researcher to develop the intended speaking skills of the experimental group students. The implementation of these activities took about thirty hours in a period of two months. By the end of the experiment, a post-test was administered to the experimental and control groups to find out the effect of Dogme strategy on developing the second year students’ speaking skills identified in the present study. It was concluded that the present study provided evidence for the positive effect of using Dogme strategy on developing the experimental group students’ speaking skills.
