Abstract

The grasses of Poaceae are “ecologically the most dominant and economically by far the most important family in the world”. In human evolution, as well as for grazing mammals like cows or horses, the Poaceae played an essential role. Some of the grass species have been proved to show therapeutic effect and many of the Poaceae species have been proved to have anticancer activities.
The objective of this work was targeted towards assessing the efficacy of the Stipagrostis scoparia as a source of potential medicinal in order to further increase their propagation. In fulfillment of these goals, the investigation was accomplished and included the following:
1.The evaluation of the biological potentialities of the methanolic extract of the plant.
2.Chemical study of Stipagrostis scoparia extract (isolation and identification of compounds isolated from each fraction).
3.Attempts for establishment of helpful identification (genetically).
4.Biological study of the isolated compounds as anticancer agents.
5.Development of an accurate, reproducible and sensitive HPLC method for the quantitative determination of tricin (the most active anticancer agent) in S. scoparia methanolic extract
