Abstract

Radiation protection and its measurements are important subject for all radiation users. selection of detector’s materials are carefully guided under restricted conditions to fulfill their need in specific radiation measurements .The aim of the thesis is to prepare some selected glassy absorbers from aluminum oxide glasses doped with some activators to be tested and used as high efficient radiation dosimeter. Testing was done through thermoluminescence technique. In the present work, some phosphor glasses based on aluminum oxide with the chemical formula of 15Al2O3-35P2O5-25CaO-25Na2CO3 (symbolized as APCN) all in mol%, doped with different concentrations of Si atoms, were prepared by using a conventional melt-quenching method and checked using X-ray diffraction pattern. This thesis contains three chapters, conclusion and references. The first chapter contains a theoretical background on thermoluminescence phenomenon and its mechanisms, how they occur and ways to analyze, some materials that are based on this phenomenon and literature survey on some TLD materials . Also the OSL phenomenon was briefly represented and compared with the TL phenomenon. Also in this chapter the phenomena of the interaction of photons with matter, the dosimetric and the radiological units, and the introductory study and types of glasses and how to prepare were given. In the second chapter the experimental techniques and methods carried out in this work are presented starting from preparation of a newly phosphor glasses based on aluminum oxide and ending with the resulting promising detectors. We introduced the glass preparation, X-ray check of the samples to test glass structure and studying the optical, FTIR and UV-vis, and thermal information of the samples (DTA). Then, the irradiation facilities of sources used are described. A description of basic components of TL instrument and experimental procedures are introduced. Fading studies of TL signals are involved and the role of best detectors choice is given. In the third chapter, results of each measurement during this work are discussed, starting from the APCN glass system preparation, the XRD check, the optical properties ending with the dosimetric properties of the best choice glass sample to be used as a promising detector. Within this chapter, detail studies about the overall characterizations and properties of our new glass system are given. These include the spectral properties, DTA measurements, sensitivity-optical band gap relationship, trap parameters determination using computer glow curve deconvolution (CGCD) method. In addition, reproducibility, repeatability, dose response curve, threshold dose, fading effect and the calculation of mass attenuation coefficients of the APCN glass system are included.
