Abstract

Platelet rich plasma is a new hope and a promising solution that has been proposed in the field of rejuneviation therapy and the cure of alopecia areata and androgentic alopecia those two common forms of hair fall.
Few researches have been carried in the last few years to determine the efficacy of such modality in the treatment of both diseases in different parts of the world .
Our study was carried out to:
• Evaluate the effect of autologus platelet rich plasma (PRP) in treatment of Alopecia Areata (AA) and Androgentic Alopecia (AGA).
• To compare between the effectiveness of intradermal injection of PRP alone or in combination with topical minoxidil 5% in treatment of Alopecia Areata (AA) and Androgentic Alopecia (AGA).
The research was carried on 20 patients (10 with AA and 10 with AGA) who were selected among patients attending the Dermatology outpatient clinic at Assiut University Hospital ,their ages ranged from ( 20-35) years old. 5 patients in each group were instructed to use minoxidil 5% as an adjuvant therapy after platelet rich plasma . The research was conducted from October 2011 till June 2012.
• All patients were resistant to the usual conventional treatment as daily regular use of minoxidil and steroids for more than 3months.
The results obtained were classified into two groups;
o Treatment responders : patients showed hair regrowth, and / or increase hair density and /or reduction in size of the lesion.
o Treatment non responders : all patients showed no hair regrowth, and / or decrease hair density and /or increase size of the lesion.
The results of the study showed that:
o 80% of AA patients treated by PRP alone were treatment responders.
o 20% of AA patients treated by PRP alone were treatment non responders.
o 100% of AA patients treated by PRP and minoxidil were treatment non responders o 80% of AGA patients treated by PRP alone were treatment responders o 20% of AGA patients treated by PRP alone were treatment non responders o 100% of AGA patients treated by PRP and minoxidil were treatment non responders.
