Abstract

One hundred and fifty women in the third stage of labor after vaginal delivery were randomized into study(drainage)group and control(clamping)group.
In the study group, placental cord drainage was performed. In both groups, the placenta was delivered by Brandt Andrew method. The duration of third stage and amount of blood loss were compared. The incidence of postpartum hemorrhage, retained placenta, manual removal of placenta, and the need for blood transfusion were compared.
Results: In 150 cases, 75 cases were assigned to the study group, 75 cases were assigned to the control group.
The mean duration of third stage of labor was significantly shorter in the study group compared to the control group (3.39 minutes vs. 5.78 minutes) (P<0.001).
The mean volume of released blood in the study group, was (183.3 mL, versus 239.1 mL) in the control group (P<0.001).
