Abstract

Knowledge deficit in early adolescence period and lack of guidance regarding menstrual health problems will result in tremendous negative consequences on adolescent’s reproductive, social, psychological and physical health allover life. On the other hand, if proper and effective self care practices regarding menstrual health disorders are conducted; improved handling of such problems will be obvious. Consequently, a positive reproductive, social, psychological and physical health of adolescents will take place. The nurse should teach the adolescent girls about self care practices and how to cope with their menstrual period and its related disorders in a healthy way (Abedian et al.,2011).
Aim of the Study
This study aimed to assess self-care practices of adolescents in managing their menstruation & its related disorders.
Subjects and Methods:
Research design: Descriptive design
Setting:
This study was conducted at both El-Agouza and Ain Shams Technical Nursing Institutes.
Subjects:
A purposive sample of 100 female adolescents was included in the study sample with the following inclusion criteria; students enrolled in 1PstP, 2PndP, 3PrdP year at the above mentioned Technical Nursing Institutes and their ages ranged from 15-17 years. Exclusive criteria: adolescents suffering from delayed puberty, chronic diseases and those who were subjected to hormonal therapy.
Tool of data collection:
Structured questionnaire was used for history taking including; characteristics of the studied sample (age, residence, academic year and technical institute name), knowledge of the adolescents regarding menstruation, its related disorders and reported self care practices regarding menstruation & its related disorders.
Field work:
The study tool was designed by the researcher in the light of relevant review and studies. The tool was subjected to a jury of expert to test its validity. A pilot study was carried out involving 10% of the expected sample size then they were excluded later from the study sample. The necessary modifications were done as revealed from the pilot. Then the field work was carried out where the researcher was available twice/ week in each study setting by rotation. Each study subject was individually interviewed after clear clarification of the study nature and its expected outcomes. The study sample approval was a prerequisite to be involved in the study.
