Abstract

VPA is a drug used in many health problems such as epilepsy. Weight Again, induced by VPA, is a serious side effect is confirmed in many studies.
Weight gain, not only effects on patients’ body image and self-confidence, it
may induce several pathological problems such as diabetes and hypertension
as well.
VPA has been available on the market for many years. It is therefore
remarkable that the underlying mechanism of the working of this drug still
needs to be defined. In addition, it is not known precisely why VPA induces
weight gain in humans.
This study was carried out on 30 children; 20 males and 10 females,
diagnosed as idiopathic epilepsy and controlled on sodium valproate
monotherapy. Their ages ranged from 6 to 15 years with a mean age of
8.88±2.25. The study was conducted over one year from October 2012 to
January 2014 .
The patients were recruited from those attending Pediatric Neurology
Clinic, Pediatric Department, Tanta University. Thirty children, 20 males
and W females with a mean age of 9.68±2.61, matched clinically healthy
children served as control group.
