Abstract

According to results obtained in this research, we concluded that overweight and obesity are a problem among Sohag University students. Overweight and obesity were more common among male students compared to females. Less than half of sampled students (43%) were considered as overweight or obese. This percent is considered high in compare with other results obtained from different researches in various countries among university students.
The prevalence of abdominal obesity measured as waist circumference (31.3%) was significantly higher than overall obesity measured as {BMI} (8.1%) among university students and it was more common among female students compared to males. We also concluded that increase consumption of some foods like sweets and quick meals will increase prevalence of overweight and obesity. On the other hand, consumption of other foods like vegetables and fruits will protect the individuals from gain more weight. Most of students eating their meals irregularly which associated with increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity. Eating more meals also associated with increasing prevalence of both overweight and obesity.
Also, we concluded that low physical activity was the major character among Sohag University students. It was also considered as a major factor associated with increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity in students. Students with moderate or high activity levels were less affected with obesity. Lacking of competitions in different types of sports in our university increasing prevalence of low activity level which play an important role in increasing overweight and obesity.
Recommendations
1- Further researches are needed to investigate the prevalence of factors associated with overweight and obesity among larger samples representing all faculties in our university students.
2- Awareness among university students should be increased, through health promotion, health education and nutritional programs that encourage increase in consumption of fruits and vegetables which is recommended for a good health and targeting the impact of overweight and obesity on morbidity and mortality.
3- Daily physical activity for university students should be encouraged in all university educational centers and faculties, as it plays a protective role against obesity. Therefore dietary and exercise counseling are required as preventive strategies for university students.
4- Obesity represents a health problem to university students, as they have been experiencing a nutritional transition in food choices during the past years from the ordinary Egyptian diet into the western fast food pattern. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to what university canteens offer for university students, in order to follow a balanced diet, to maintain physical fitness, and body mass index within the normal range.
5- Decision makers must address the problem of overweight and obesity and focus on prevention strategies especially among university students. Furthermore, public demand for health and nutritional information should be taken into consideration when implementing strategies aimed at improving the nutritional well-being of individual.
