Abstract

The elderly are rapidly growing population group in the world. Data collected over a 30-years period have demonstrated the increasing prevalence of hypertension with age. The risk of coronary artery disease, stroke, congestive heart disease, chronic kidney insufficiency and dementia is also increased in this subgroup of hypertensives. Hypertension in the elderly patients represents a management dilemma to cardiovascular specialists and other practioners.
A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on a sample size of (261) elderly subjects both males and females above 65 years old attending Taranees El-Arab Health Center to ensure an optimum health status for the elderly population. Results: In the current study it was found that the frequency of hypertension in elderly was 59.8%; among those 64.1% were males and 57.0% were females. The study revealed that the frequency of hypertension in elderly was statistically significant related with aging, educational level, family history of stroke, renal and cardiac disease, exposure to stress and obesity. In addition, this study revealed that end organ damage was statistically significant related to hypertension. In addition, the study showed that 34.5% of the hypertensive elderly have normal serum total cholesterol < 200 mg/dl while 25.3% of them have serum total cholesterol above normal level. It was found by logistic regression analysis that age over 75 years, obesity (BMI > 30 kg/m2) and stress were the most significant factors associated with of hypertension in elderly. Recommendations: Health education programs about hypertension are needed for elderly patients improving the knowledge, positive attitude and health practice among them.
