I n t h e y o u n g , v a r i o u s d e g r e e s o f r e t a r d a t i o n o f g r o w t h
and d e v e l o p m e n t a r e commonly f o u n d among p a t i e n t s w i t h
c a r d i a c d i s e a s e s p a r t i c u l a r l y t h o s e o f t h e c o n g e n i t a l
t y p e (Linde e t a l . , 1 9 7 1 ) .
T h i s m i g h t be r e l a t e d t o s e v e r a l f a c t o r s , Cirst o f
w h i c h j u s t a s i m p l e a s s o c i a t i o n b e t w e e n g r o w t h r e t a r d a -
t i o n and some o t h e r a s s o c i a t e d f a c t o r s s u c h a s n e r e d i t y ,
u n d e r n u t r i t i o n , p a r a s i t i s m , e n d o c r i n o p a t h i e s , o r l u n g ,
l i v e r , a n d k i d n e y d i s e a s e s . Such f a c t o r s w i l l i n f l u e n c e
t h e g r o w t h a n d d e v e l o p m e n t o f a l l a f f e c t e d c h i l d r e n
i r r e s p e c t i v e o f t h e p r e s e n c e o f a cafdiac l e s i o n ( M a r t e n s
and M e r e d i t h , 1 9 4 2 ; W a t s o n , 1967; H o l t , 1 9 6 8 ) .
A n o t h e r f a c t o r i s t h e p o s s i b i l i t y t h a t b o t h t h e
c a r d i a c l e s i o n a n d g r o w t h r e t a r d a t i o n may b e c a u s e d by
one and t h e same aetiological f a c t o r s c.g., m o n g o l i s m ,
critil~isn,~ gargoylism o r ~’~rfdn’ss y n d r ome .
