Abstract

Member: ol the &ctiaomycetes wnici~ live s saprophytic
existence can be found with greater or less frequency in
moat ecological settings, soil having the greatest population
density. Numerically they are less dominant than
the bacteria and more prominant than the fungi (Taber,
1960). They occur in greatest numbers In the top few
inches of the soil and decrease with depth (Waksman &
Purvis , 1932) .
Actinomycetes which are common in soil, have 3 important
roles in it. One is their function in decomposing the
organic matter of the soil (Williams, 1966). Another is
their effect on soil structure and they are undoubtedly
responeible in part for the earthy odour of soil (Gerber &
Lechevalier, 1965). The third interesting role of actinomyceteo
in soil is their ability to produce antagonistic
phenomenon. Therefore, many investigators drew the atteneion
toward factors related to their isolation from their
natural habitate , the soil (Corke and Chase, 1956, 1964
and Corbaz et al., 1963).
Actinomycetes have recently gained great economic
and public health importance as producers of antibiotics,
vitamins, and enzymes (Waksman, 1967). The great majority
