Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing refusal speech act realization of Egyptian learners of Korean language (EK), and comparing their refusal speech act patterns with those of Korean native speakers (KK) and Egyptian native speakers. This comparison will show whether Egyptian learners of Korean language have similar features of KK or EE.
The final aim of learning a foreign language is to communicate smoothly with its native speakers. But a successful communication cannot be achieved by the acquisition of grammatical rules of the foreign language only. Acquisition of pragmatic features is as necessary as acquisition of grammatical rules in order to communicate successfully in a foreign language. When the learner of foreign language communicates with native speakers of the foreign language without giving attention to the pragmatic and socio-cultural rules of the foreign language, communication failure can happen. The possibility of this failure is quite high especially when the learners of foreign language perform speech acts. This study investigates the Egyptian learners of Korean language’s performance of speech act of refusal. It focuses on the pragmatic and socio-cultural rules, so it differs from most of previous studies on Arabian learners of Korean language that used to focus on grammatical rules only.
The study was performed on native Egyptians, native Koreans and Egyptian learners of Korean language. Data were collected using written DCT (Discourse Complete Test) that consisted of 18 situations electing refusals of requests, invitations/offers and suggestions. Data were analyzed according to a Classification Scheme of Refusal Strategies, that reflects features of both of Korean and Egyptian refusal, was made by the researcher using previous studies’ schemes.
Chapter 1 introduces the rationale and purpose of this study and discusses its methodology and limitations. Also it examines previous studies that focused on refusal speech act.
Chapter 2 examines speech act theory, characteristics of the speech act of refusal, direct and indirect refusal strategies and the classification scheme of refusal speech act used in analyzing the survey.
Chapter 3 shows the method and subject of the survey.
Chapter 4 discusses the results of the survey’s analysis. First all the aspects of refusal strategy that the three groups used were examined, and then refusal strategies were analyzed according to the variables of refusal electing situation type, social status and the degree of intimacy.
Chapter 5 reviews the research result and clarifies the meaning of this paper. And it discusses the forward research direction of teaching speech act of refusal to Egyptian learners of Korean language.
The Egyptian learners of Korean language were found to use refusal strategies sometimes similar to Egyptians’ refusal style and sometimes else similar to Koreans’ refusal styles, which means that Egyptian learners of Korean language’s refusal style has the characteristics of Interlaguage. This paper is the first study that focuses on realization of refusal speech act patterns of Egyptian learners of Korean language. This study shall be a basic study that can help in teaching Korean refusal speech act in Egypt.
