Abstract This study was conducted at Suez Canal University to study the possibility of using non-conventional method of tree fertilization, known as deep root fertilization for the street tree Ficus retusa, as well as the quantities of NPK fertilizers in two forms for deep root fertilization or surface fertilization in total of (0-0-0),( 38-13-25),( 76-26-50),( 113-39-75) and (225-78-150) tree-1 year-1 divided into 4 splits every three months, for correcting the problems of poor growth, mineral deficiency symptoms in street trees, increasing efficiency of trees for reducing some air pollutants as CO2, SO2, NO2 and some wood characters. The design was a complete randomized in a factorial experiment. Analyses of covariance were used in same variables traits besides its effects on some characters. The results showed that there was an impact of fertilization on growth of selected branch including its length and the number of new leaves formed on this branch as well as the number of new branches formed on the trees in response to fertilization. Meanwhile, there were limited effects on some vegetative characters as tree height and trunk diameter at a height of 20 cm and 110 cm from soil surface. Also, no specific trend for CO2 abatement as affected by fertilization. In the case of SO2 and NO2 trees fertilized showed higher impact than non-fertilized trees. Concerning the fertilizer application methods, it is shown that the deep root fertilization merely excellent than surface fertilization in all vegetative studied characters, beside that it is environmentally friend. Generally, the interaction between the methods of application of fertilizers and the fertilizer quantities did not have a clear impact on the selected branch length. Meanwhile, either deep root fertilization or surface fertilization with the amounts of fertilizer as or equal to 76-26-50 tree-1 year-1 was the best. Also, deep root fertilization or surface fertilization were the best in the formation of the largest number of leaves on the chosen branch and number of branches formed on the tree.
