Abstract Field bean is one of the most important legume crops of the world. Breeders are constantly occupied with the improvement of existing varietiP.s as well as the introduction of new ones. For a field b~~· variety to be successful in agriculture it must be a high yielding, disease resistant variety which also possesses high quality seed, suitable for the different nutritional uses intended for it..Furthermore it must be adapted to the environment whe:>.’ it is to be grown. During the last 50 years or so and since .Miller’s (1927), original paper on the induction of genetic chang-~ through X-irradiation, mutation breeding taken a place along with traditional breeding methods in many parts of the world. There are several instances in the literature of successful mutation breeding especially in the self-fertilizers.
