Abstract Furfural was estimated in a number of Egyptian agricultural waste products. The colourimetric method proved to be more accurate for furfural determination than the gravimetric or the titrimetric methods. Among the waste products tested, corn cobs and bagasse were found to give the highest yields of furfural. The optimum acid concentrations for production of furfural from these materials were; 8% in case of hydrochloric acid and 7-8% in case of sulphuric acid. |
