Abstract Roy andSil~er~ann (1982) stated that, diarrhea may be cefined as water and electrolytes mal-absorption leadin~ to accelerated excretion of intestinal contents Diarrhea is sometimes difficult to define in terms of numbers or consistency of stools because there are wide variations t_n colonic functions. Some infants may pass one firm stool every second or third day, whereas other may have 5-8 soft small stools daily. They mentioned that, a gradual or sudden increase in the number of stools a reduction in their £irm consistency, coupled with an iL:rease i~ their fluid contents, or a tendency for the stool to be greer. are i~portant factor~ for diagnosis of diarrhea. Morbidity and c.ortalitv rates T~e acute ~iarrheal diseEses i~~nfants and young children have ~een and continue to be the scourge of tropical lands. They constitute the dominant cause of morbidity and mortality in the young population of under developed and developing countries (Swift and Hamilton 1973; Ortiz, 1978; Robbins and Lee, 1978; ~!andal and Tarlow, 1981) \ 1981 |
