Abstract

This study aimed to assess the prevalence of remnants of
conception after surgical evacuation of first trimestric abortion
This study was conducted at the patients attending the obstetric
emergency department in Ain shams university maternity hospital in the
period between August 2011to December 2011 on 300 patients to whom
surgical evacuation was indicated after first trimestric abortion
In this study all patients passed through history taking, clinical
examination, Trans-vaginal ultrasound, laboratory investigations,
evacuation and curettage and lastly pathology for remnants of products.
In this study the Trans -vaginal ultrasound was done to the 300
cases pre and post evacuation and found that 25 cases (8.3%) were having
incomplete evacuation (Group A) and 275 cases (91.7%) were found to
have complete evacuation (Group B)
In this study the mean endometrial thickness of the Group A were
11.6 ± 3.1mm, and it ranged from 4 to 19 mm, while it were 9.8 ± 2.1mm
and it ranged from 6 to 14 mm for Group B, and the cutoff point of
endometrial thickness of group A was 17.8 mm while in Group B were
14mm
In this study the histopathologic examination of the studied
biopsies resulted in 17 patients (68%) diagnosed as positive for retained
products of conception while 8 patients (32%) diagnosed as negative for
retained products of conception.
from this study it’s concluded that the use of trans-vaginal
ultrasound (TVS) is indicated for assessment of remnants of conception
after surgical evacuation of first trimesteric abortion.
