Abstract

The effect of length of the abutments supporting soft lined mandibular complete tissue-tooth supported overdenture on the marginal bone height changes around these abutments was evaluated in this study.
Ten patients were selected from the out patients clinic of prosthetic department faculty of dentistry Ain Shams university for this study. All the selected patients were having only two lower canines remaining and completely edentulous maxilla.
Patients were divided into two equal groups:
Group I: In this group, the two lower canines were reduced to 1-2 mm above the gingival margin (short) dome shaped preparation.
Group II: In this group the two lower canines were reduced to 3-4 mm above the gingival margin, (moderate length) dome shaped preparation.
Patients were rehabilitated by mucosa supported upper complete denture and soft lined mucosa-tooth supported lower complete overdenture.
Radiographic tracing of the marginal bone height changes mesial and distal to the abutment teeth was carried out using digital panoramic radiography at the time on denture insertion and 6 and 12 months after denture insertion. Radiographs were taken to obtain required study readings and data were collected
and tabulated for statistical analysis. The results of this study showed that, the marginal bone height loss around the moderate length dome shaped abutments was greater than that around short dome shaped abutments. The results showed also more bone loss distal to the abutment teeth than that recorded on the mesial aspect.
