Abstract

This study was carried out during the two successive seasons of 2012 and 2013 for improving of pomegranate fruit productivity and qualities through carrying out the following two experiments :The first experiment was designed to hold short-term improvement by conducting some field treatments such as bagging, spraying kaolin, GA3 and CaCl2 that will overcome the most important problems, of the pomegranate production such as fruit cracking, sunburn and improvement of fruit coloring on two of the most important pomegranate varieties cultivated on a commercial scale ,these cultivars are Manfalouty and Wonderful. The second experiment was designed to make improvement through breeding and hybridization between some cultivars of pomegranate namely (Manfalouty, Wonderful, Sweet, Black, and Akka) in order to make improvement long-term and get new varieties of pomegranate combine in characteristics between the good qualities of the parents, such as the lack of cracking, quality coloring in each of the peel and aril, seed softness and other important qualities
Methods &Results
In first experiment: Fruit bagging as well as application of GA3 and CaCl2 at the second week of June, and kaolin was sprayed at three times one at the second week of June, July and August in both seasons. At harvest time, when fruits become fully colored (the second week of October for Manfalouty cv and last week of October for Wonderful cv) in both seasons number of fruits per tree in each treatment was counted and fruit yield (kg) per tree was calculated. Also, percentages of fruit cracking, sunburn per tree and marketable fruits as well as fruit quality were recorded. Results showed that, bagging and spraying with GA3, CaCl2 and kaolin improved marketable fruits percentages, fruit quality as well as reduced fruit cracking and sunburn percentages of Manfalouty and Wonderful pomegranate cultivars. In second experiment: Determination of some vegetative growth, for dates of flowering and ripening, physical and chemical fruit qualities and seed properties of all investigated cultivars was done. Also, genetic analysis of all five cultivar by using RAPD PCR technique with markers for determination similarity and variability among these cultivars and hybridization between these cultivars were done. The results showed that there were significant differences among all cultivars and their obtained hybrids for all studied traits. Also, similarity was varied among all cultivars. These results can be useful for pomegranate breeding programs
Conclusion
from these studies, the best results with regard to yield and fruit quality were obtained by bagging, in combined with spraying GA3 at 50 ppm and kaolin at 5% in both cultivars with fruit yield and quality. Therefore, these treatments could be recommended for improving Manfalouty and Wonderful pomegranate cvs performance under similar conditions. Also, from the primary results of genetic improvement it is clear that, we need to more evaluation and selection about the prime seedlings produced from different hybridization that had higher fruit characteristics and good resistance to major physiological disorders such as fruit cracking relatively of their genetic structure according to several studies, and selecting the best hybrids with highly adapted to several ranges of Egyptian conditions and variable of ripening dates to meet orders of local and international markets
