Abstract This study mcludcs 30 pat1ents with tetralogy of Fallot, who were palliated by Blalock- Taussig operation, in the last frve years (1980- !985). These cases were selected after taking a full history and a thorough clinical examination and the following investigations were done: 1 X-rays of the chest and heart in the posteroanterior and lateral views. 2. Electrocardiogram. 3. Cardiac catheterization and cinangiography. 4. Complete blood picture including haemoglobin, kidney and liver function tests, serum electrolytes, and blood gas analysis. 5. Coagulation battery. 6. Urine and stool analysis. 7. Bacteriological studies. Classic blalock - taussig operation was performed in 7 patients during the early period of the study. In 2 of them (6%) the operation was on the opposite side to the aortic arch (contralateral), while in the other 5 patients the operation was on the same side as the aortic arch (ipsilateral). The rest of the patients (23) were palliated with modified Blalock Taussig operation using Gore -Tex tubes between 4-6 mm in diameter. |
