Abstract Information retrieval systems play an important role for locating the relevant documents to users. In addition to the retrieval quality, the process of fast document retrieval from document collections, is also important in the information technology age. The information retrieval process is handled and conducted from the point of view of the genetic algorithms. There is some sort of analogy between the mechanism of the information retrieval systems and that one of the genetic algorithm. In this trend, a genetic algorithm approach for information retrieval is chosen; from the literature; analyzed, and discussed. During the reproduction and crossover of the algorithm, a new genetic combination occurs and a subject inherits a good gene from both parents. The crossover of partial solutions improves the performance of the algorithm. Moreover, during the analysis and implementation of the chosen genetic algorithm, two different fitness functions are adopted. The chosen fitness functions play an important role in the genetic algorithm performance. Some sorts of modifications are presented for the chosen algorithm. |
