Abstract

Ceramic and anti-melting materials industries represent one of seven major industries in the Egyptian market. It represents 7% of the production value in Egyptian Industrial sectors. Ceramic industry consumes large amounts of water in molds washing and final products and in polishing of final products that generates large amount of polluted water that contains harmful chemicals with negative impact on environment.
Different conventional physicochemical treatments have been used to treat the ceramic wastewater. Removal of pollutants produced by industrial plants is requirement for reuse of water and to obtain environmental standards.
The main target of this work is to make upgrading of constructed ceramic wastewater treatment plant for reuse by additional treatment processes of this wastewater to produce better water quality suitable for reuse. The study was applied in Elsharq ceramic factory located in Bany Sewif city industrial zone, Beni Sweif Governorate, Egypt.
The thesis will include the following six chapters:
CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION
CHAPTER II: LITERATURE REVIEW
CHAPTER III: MATERIAL & METHODS
CHAPTER IV: RESULTS
CHAPTER V: DISCUSSION
CHAPTER VI: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION
This chapter includes a background about ceramic industry which creates problem due to its wastewater and the necessity to treat it, objective of this study, scope of the work and finally thesis organization to cover work done and conclusion.
1.4.2 CHAPTER II: LITERATURE REVIEW
This chapter shows general description of ceramic industry, and its wastewater treatment technologies, an overview of Elsharq ceramic wastewater treatment plant as a case study, and introduction about industrial wastewater treatment, ceramic industry wastewater treatment application in the world and in Egypt.
1.4.3 CHAPTER III: MATERIAL & METHODS
This chapter describes the laboratory work which includes sampling, chemicals, analysis and methods of the work.
1.4.4 CHAPTER IV: RESULTS
This chapter includes interpretation of results for the raw wastewater characteristics for the measured parameters, presentation of the existing industrial wastewater treatment plant results, and introduces the settability results, presentation for the industrial wastewater treatment plant results with proposing additional treatment steps to improve the performance of the industrial wastewater treatment plant to be reused as process water.
1.4.5 CHAPTER V: DISCUSSION
This chapter includes discussion of results of constructed industrial wastewater treatment plant, assessment the additional treatments processes, and compare the existing treatment efficiency with using different coagulants results.
1.4.6 CHAPTER VI: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
This chapter precise a conclusion for this study work, technical recommendation via additional treatment step as an upgrading of treatment plant for reuse the treated wastewater in site.
Technical assessment of the performance of the running wastewater treatment process of existing plant was carried out.
Coagulation/ flocculation and precipitation studies were performed using different coagulants in a conventional Jar-test apparatus. Alum, ferric chloride and polyaluminum chloride were used as coagulants, respectively. A sand filter unit was added as tertiary stage at the end of treatment processes.
Additional presettling of raw wastewater to coagulation with alum and polymer followed by sand filtration achieved the good removal efficiency for all measured parameters so that the effluent wastewater was comply to be discharged to marine environment additional treatment is required to be reused for unrestricted irrigation, and to be recycled in the factory.
The optimal condition was obtained at the dosage 285 mg/l ferric chloride and polymer followed by sand filtration provide the TSS, COD & BOD removal efficiency of 98.9%,93.7& 90.6, respectively..
The optimal removal efficiency of pollutants from ceramic wastewater was obtained when using presettling then coagulation with ferric chloride and polyacrylamide followed by sand filtration achieved the highest removal efficiency for all parameters, so that the treated wastewater can reused in unrestricted irrigation after chorine addition as disinfectant, and / or to be recycled in the factory.
