Abstract

INTRODUCTION :
The Western Desert comprises the area west of the Nile
River and Delta. It extends 600 to BOOkms from the Nile Valley
to the Libyan border in the west, and 1000kms from the Mediterranean
Sea to the Sudanese border in the south, covering an
area of about 700,000 km 2 •
Recently, a strong attention has been given to the geological
and geophysical implications of the Egyptian Western
Desert, regarding the expected petroleum occurrences in the
extreme western part of Egypt, as a potential source of oil.
Also, a special emphasis is directed to the predictable accumulations
of the ground water.
The present thesis 1s essentially concerned with the
interpretation of the available geophysical data (particularly
the ~agnetic data) ir t~e area u~der st~~~-.
This a~ea lies in the extreme wester~ part of the Keste~~
Desert, bet·....,een latitudes 28c 48’ & 30c 37’ ~and longlt’..ldes
25° 00’ & 27° 48’ E, and covering a surface area of about
2 57,000 km (Fig. 1).
This chapter deals ’with the introductio:o of a ge:oeral
idea about the geologic setting of tbe :-;ort~er:l l.,res’!:err: Desert
with special reference to the study area. Among the terms of
the geologic sett1ng, t~ere are; the Geomorphology, the
