Abstract

Emotional Intelligence is a form of intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions. Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to recognize and regulate emotions in ourselves and others. Emotions play a key role in decision-making process. As such, it represents a critically important competency for effective leadership and individual performance in health care organizations today. Increasingly, organizations are recognizing the need for emotionally intelligent individuals within the organization to ensure long-term success for the organization. Emotional intelligence is recognized as more than a collection of professional abilities. It is a set of mental abilities that involves understanding, managing, perceiving, and using a person’s emotions.
The ability to deal effectively with emotions may also contribute to how a leader handles the needs of individuals, motivates employees, and fosters a sense of belonging in the work place. Emotional intelligence as a set of skills is believed to contribute to the accurate recognition and expression of emotion in oneself and others, the effective regulation of emotion in oneself and others, and the use of feelings to motivate, plan, and.
