Abstract

The incidence of elderly people increase in last decades due to increased awareness and revolution of technology especially in medicine and appearance of new equipments that facilitate early detection of diseases and so early management.
The kidney, like other organs in the body undergoes the process of aging, the aging process is associated with some deteriorations of kidney functions.
The aim of this study, to evaluate function of renal tubule in elderly.
In this study, 30 subjects were studied by taking detailed medical history, full clinical examination, full laboratory investigations including complete blood count, fasting blood sugar, renal function test( serum creatinine and blood urea), serum uric acid, complete urine analysis, hepatitis virus markers ( anti-HCV antibodies and hepatitis B surface antigen using ELISA), tubular markers (urinary Alph1- microglobulin, urinary Beta2-microglobulin and urinary Gamma-glutamyltransferase), cystatin C and Ultrasonography Abdomen-pelvis to asses the kidney and urinary tact.
The subjects were divided into three groups:-
• Group I: 10 normal healthy persons aged 20-30 years as a control group.
• Group II:10 elderly persons aged 60-70 years.
• Group III: 10 elderly persons aged 71-80 years .
Persons with diabetes mellitus, Hypertension, Gout, Viral hepatitis, History of bone disease, Collagen disease, Corticosteroid therapy, Prolonged NSAID therapy and History of obstructive uropathy were excluded from the study.
In the present study, group II and group III showed higher serum level of cystatin C than group I , with no statistically differences between group II and III.
Also in the present study, the urinary level of Alpha1- microglobulin (A1-MG) is lower in group I than group II and III, while there were no statistical significant differences between group II and III.
The present study showed that, the urinary Beta2- microglobulin (B2-MG) is statistically lower in group I than group II and III, also, group III have values statistically lower than group II.
As regarding Gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), urinary level is statistically lower in group I than group III, with no statistically differences between group II and III.
This results may suggest the effect of the age on the function of renal tubule in the elderly.
