Abstract

”Nanotechnology is an idea that most people simply didn’t believe. ” (Merkle 20()O) Construction is a massive global industry, with a very high environmental footprint. Many key players in the construction industry are pushing towards a more sustainable future, adopting new materials and new techniques. Green building professionals want to apply sustainable development in the design, construction and operation of buildings. They struggle to minimize the use of non-renewable resources like petroleum, natural gas and coal, and reduce waste and pollutants. Energy conservation is highly important to green building as it both saves resources and minimize waste and pollutants. ”It is not as though nanotechnology will be an option; it is going to be essential for coming up with sustainable technologies.” advises Paul Anastas, director of the American Chemical Society-Green Chemistry Institute. Globally, nanotechnologies are expected to reduce carbon foot print in three key areas: transportation, insulation in residential and commercial buildings, and generation of renewable photovoltaic energy. It is needless to mention that the last two of these three areas are centered in the building industry, pointing that building will in fact lead the green nano revolution. This research is divided into three parts which review this issue as follows: 1.Sustainability: this chapter discusses sustainability with an overview of sustainable architecture, considering all three dimensions of sustainability: environmental - economical - social, also performance criteria which measures sustainable architecture (LEED-BREEM), then shows how building can be sustainable and/or smart in favor of environment.
2.Nanotechnology divided into two parts: • Nanoarchitecture and Sustainability (Sustainable Nanoarchitecture - SNA): Nanotechnology is an enabling technology that opens new possibilities in construction sustainability. On one hand, it could lead to a better use of natural resources, obtaining a specific characteristic or property with minor material use. It can also help to solve some problems related to energy in building, consumption and generation .
• Nanomaterials: Many nano-enhanced products and processes now on the market can help create more sustainable, energy-conserving buildings, providing materials that reduce waste and toxic outputs as well as dependence on non-renewable resources3.Analytical part: review convergence between nanotechnology and sustainable architecture via using nanomaterial to get to more energy efficient architecture. That is through a comparison among three systems, Conventional, Sustainable, and Nano-enhanced Sustainable, emphasizing on nanomaterials related to energy conservation. Efficiency, Solar Energy.
