Abstract

The stem cells and cord blood banks research is a rare scientific subject that has created controversy, not only among the scientists but the general public, stem cells researching promises to deliver novel innovative techniques for treatment of previously incurable diseases.
Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth, stem cells are mother cells that have the potential to become any type of cell in the body.
One of the main characteristics of stem cells is their ability to self-renew or multiply while marinating to potential to develop into other types of cells. Stem cells can become cells of the blood, heart, bones, skin and muscles.
There are different sources of stem cells but all types of stem cells have the same capacity to develop into multiple types of cells.
A cord blood bank is a facility which store umbilical cord blood for future uses. Both private and public cord blood banks have developed since the mid to late 1990 in response to the potential for cord blood transplants in treating diseases of the blood and immune system.
The present study aimed to assess knowledge and attitude of health care providers regarding uses of stem cells and cord blood banks.
- Sitting:
The study will be conducted at in Ain Shames University Maternity Hospital.
- Sample:
All available health care providers work in the mentioned setting they around (20 doctors and 75 nurses).
* Criteria of the sample:
Different age, education level working in the previously mentioned setting.
Tools of data collection:
The tools used were for data collections are:
Structured interviewing questionnaire Appendix (II):
A constructed Arabic questionnaire sheet was designed by the researchers after reviewing the related literature. The tool will included 19 multiple choice question as well as an open and close-ended questions it will divide into two parts:
- Part I (question 1-4) it will covered to personal data of the health care providers including in the study as personal identification, demographic data e.g. name, age, place of residence, level of education.
- Part II (question 5-20) this part will be designated to assess health care providers level of knowledge regarding stem cells and cord blood banks .
Knowledge scoring system: the score range between 3, for correct complete knowledge ,2 for correct incomplete knowledge and 1 for incorrect know , total knowledge scores ranged from 60 to 100 for satisfactory knowledge and less than 60 for unsatisfactory knowledge.
The Likert attitude scale Appendix (3):
It is a self administrated scale was used to assess attitude of health care providers regarding uses of stem cells and cord blood banks and preservation of placenta post the labor.
The present study revealed that:
1- The more age of health care providers had good knowledge between 25-30 year.
2- The higher educated health care providers had more information versus mid educated.
3- Most of health care providers did not take training programs to stem cells and cord blood banks.
4- The study revaluated that, there are many factors which effect health care providers and percentage of knowledge level such as level of education, shortage of staff especially the nurses and quality of provided service (training staff).
According, the study results in a number of important recommendations:
1- Raising awareness of health care providers to the importance of stem cells and cord blood banks.
2- Health care providers should be informed about stem cells and current indications for its, collection, storage, and uses based on scientific evidence.
3- Activates stem cells transplantation programs in the hospitals because it very effective and important to cure from most of diseases.
4- Future research to assessment health care providers in stem cells transplantation, enhancing the quality education for health care providers.
