Abstract The rewards in family medicine come from knowing patients intimately over time and sharing their trust, respect, and friendship and from the variety of problems encountered in practice that keep the family physician professionally stimulated and challenged. The postpartum period is a convenient time to address family planning; women are particularly motivated to prevent conception just after birth, so the family physician is in good position to provide the necessary counseling regarding contraception for the new mother. The aim of our study was to assess knowledge, attitude and practice of family planning in our locality. Assessment of family planning services may help to find out health problems associated with contraceptive methods to face them properly and thereby to improve women health. The study included 200 women who were randomly selected from Kafer El-Sawlmia village , one of the Egyptian rural areas. An interview in Arabic language through a pre-coded questionnaire was completed by each one of the women whose age ranged from 18-49 years old and was visiting FHU for any reason. It was found that causes for non-use were mainly desire to get pregnant, health concerns, fear of side effects, or lack of knowledge about contraception methods. In conclusion, Improvement of the use of contraceptives and female health can be accomplished by awareness-raising seminars for husbands through use of mass media, activation of the role of family files, recording and updating the local data, proper counseling both before and at the time of method selection and helps continuous communication between family doctor and client. |
