Fiat slab-shear wall multistory structures<br>are common type construction for apartment buildings.<br>The load bearing shear walls have a dual function of resisting<br>the gravity and lateral loads.<br>In a coupled shear wall structure the external<br>lateral load generates flexure, shear and axial load in the<br>walls, in addition to compression and bending with high<br>shear stresses in coupling slab. Due to bending stiffness<br>of the slabs the walls do not act as independent simple<br>cantilevers. In this way the slab, in conjunction with<br>the shear walls, provide stiffer and stronger structures to<br>resist lateral loads. Some part of the slab which is<br>called effective width acts as a lintel beam.<br>The effective width of slabs coupling shear<br>walls have been studied by many researchers. Many parameters<br>affect the effective width. The shape of the wall<br>section, size of opening, dimensions of slab and wall section,<br>unsymmetry of walls, effect of twisting moment and the properties<br>of the slab meterial are the main parameters.
