Abstract Acute bacterial meningitis is the condition that results from invasion of meninges by bacteria that induce an acute inflammatory response. This acute inflammatory reaction, which involves the arachnoid and the pia mater, is characterized by a polymorphnuclear neutrophil leukocyte exudate ( Gr>een~>ood, 1984}. Purulent meningitis continues to be important type of meningitis in infancy and childhood. Certain types of meningitis occur more frequently. Although marked advances in antimicrobial therapy have been made, morbidity and mortality are significant, especially when adelay in diagnosis and initiation of treatment has occured fGcr>dcn, l982) ~ In clinical practice, physicians may not be able to differentiate bacterial meningitis from non-bact~rial infection. Antimicrobial agents may have to be preseribed and continued during the course of the illness, without bacteriologic confirmation of the diagnosis. |
