Abstract - Transient elastography can be used as a non-invasive method to predict the presence of esophageal varices in HCV induced cirrhotic patients as its highly sensitive, adequately specific, accurate, extremely well tolerated and can be repeated as necessary to monitor liver disease progression on an outpatient basis. - Our results do not recommend the use of platelet count /spleen diameter ratio index in prediction of presence of esophageal varices as the risk of missing people with EV would be great, and its consequences could be very deleterious. - Combination of several ratios may be tested in further studies to improve sensitivity, specificity and accuracy compared to one ratio alone. |
