Abstract

These experiments were carried out in the experimental farm, and cytological and molecular genetic lab. Genet. Dep., Fac. agric., Minia Univ., during the period of 2007-2011, using 28 sorghum local landraces which were collected from upper and middle Egypt governorates (Aswan, Kena, Sohag, Assiut, Bani Swif and Al-Fayoum).
Target of these studies was evaluation of the landraces using a set of morphological, cytological and biochemical characteristics, and studying of the evolutionary relationship between these landraces.
i: Morphological characters:
The studies included seventeen morphological characters, and the results can be summarized as follows:
1. Quantitative characters.
The separated analysis of variance for the 13 quantitative characters showed significant or highly significant differences among races for all studied traits at both seasons except plant height at 45 days, stalk diameter, and peduncle diameter in second season which were not significant. Furthermore, the combined analysis of variance over two years showed highly significant differences between races for all studied traits. Also, significant or highly significant differences between two seasons for almost traits except number of active leaves per plant, stalk diameter, peduncle exsertion, panicle width and thousand grain weight which had no significant differences between two seasons. Except panicle width, the races were not interacted significantly with the years for all studied traits.
