Abstract

The environmental quality standards are important to achieve
the minimum essential environmental health care foundations.
The environmental quality standards contain guidelines
which provide a basis for setting standards at a national level
when this is required.
Managing the various aspects of environmental health at the
level of the health - care foundation should involve all staff, as
well as patients.
The main outcome measures in this study that deals
specifically with the essential environmental health standards
required for health-care foundations are:
• Assess prevailing situations and plan the improvements that
are required.
• Develop and reach essential safety standards as a first goal.
• Support the development and application of national policies.

The cross sectional design was used in this study by using
assessment checklists which are obtained from revision of
previous research and studies performed by WHO experts in
different medical departments.
The assessment checklists were applied in Wadi El-Neel
Hospital as accredited hospital and in Electricity Hospital as a
non-accredited hospital.
The assessment checklists were divided into (11) checklists
which deal with different environmental elements which
evaluate the efficiency of environmental quality standards
application.
The assessment questionnaire was applied in Wadi El-Neel
Hospital as accredited hospital and in Electricity Hospital as a
non-accredited hospital.
The assessment questionnaire consisted of (16) questions
and applied on (50) patients in each hospital in inpatient
department to measure the patient satisfaction about the
surrounding environmental elements.
The results of the study showed that there was a defect in
some environmental quality standards application in Electricity
hospital in comparison with Wadi El-neel hospital because
Electricity hospital did not follow the guidelines and the
assessment checklists on regular time intervals to assess the
situation regarding environmental health but on the other hand
Wadi El-neel hospital applied most of environmental quality
standards through the rules of JCI accreditation.

Once specific standards have been defined for a particular
health- care foundation, they can be used as a checklist to
determine how and to what extent the existing situation fall
short of them. This will identify specific problems that need
addressing.
In hospital, a committee may be required for planning,
coordinating and monitoring implementation of targets. Members
of the committee should include managers, clinical, technical and
ancillary staff.
Analyzing the reasons for shortfalls in the most inclusive way
possible is important because most solutions will require the
participation of multiple parties including patients, careers,
health-care workers and health managers.
After that, steps should be taken both to prioritize
improvements and to work in a phased way, so that the most
urgent problems can be identified and addressed immediately,
and other benefits subsequently achieved.
So, this study provides comprehensive and reliableinformation on the essential environmental quality
standards in hospitals.
