Abstract

The present work describes a method for degradation and decolorization of Bromophenol Blue and Eosin Y dyes in aqueous solution using both pure ZnO and Ag+ doped ZnO under UV- Visible light. The two photocatalysts used in the experiments were prepared by the coprecipitation method. The photocatalysts were characterized by XRD and the photoactivity of them were tested by the degradation of two dyes. The photodegradation processes of dyes have been studied using UV–Vis spectrophotometry. The parameters studied were the initial pH values using NaOH and H2SO4, amount of catalyst, initial dye concentration, and the presence of inorganic salts such as (Cl-, and CO32-). The efficiency of pure ZnO as catalyst has been compared with Ag+ doped ZnO catalyst on the degradation of Bromophenol Blue and Eosin Y dyes in aqueous solution and the optimum conditions had been determined. Ag+ doped ZnO nanoparticles showed significant improvement in the degradation efficiency of two dyes compared to pure ZnO nanoparticles under the same conditions, where the Bromophenol Blue dye degrade by< 63 % and < 87 % under UV-Vis irradiation for 25 min in the presence of the photocatalyst pure ZnO and Ag+ doped ZnO respectively, and aqueous solution of Eosin Y dye degrade by< 76 % and < 88 % under UV-Vis irradiation for 30 min in the presence of the photocatalyst pure ZnO and Ag+ doped ZnO respectively.
