Abstract

The present study was conducted to compare post-treatment mesiodistal root angulation in extraction and non-extraction cases using panoramic radiographs and Cone Beam Computed Tomography scans.
Methodology: Twenty subjects at the end of orthodontic treatment were selected. They were divided into two equal groups. Extraction of four first premolars was performed on the first group as planned for their orthodontic treatment, while the other group was a non-extraction. Three radiographic views were taken for each subject, standard panorama, reformatted panorama and volume render. Mesiodistal root angulations were measured from the first molar anteriorly for all of the maxillary and mandibular teeth, and compared between the three modalities.
Results: Applying ANOVA to the collected data, results were obtained in both extraction and non-extraction groups; showed exaggerations in standard panorama and reformatted panorama in mesial and distal directions.
Conclusion: Neither standard nor reformatted panoramic images provide reliable information regarding mesiodistal tooth angulations and might exhibit deviations in both mesial and distal directions for all teeth.
