Abstract Psoriasis is one of the most common immune-mediated and inflammatory skin diseases, characterized by hyperproliferative keratinocytes and infiltration of T cells, dendritic cells, macrophages and neutrophils. Although the pathogenesis of psoriasis is not fully understood, there is ample evidence suggesting that the dysregulation of immune cells in the skin, particularly T cells, plays a critical role in psoriasis development. Narrowband UVB is an established and effective treatment for psoriasis acting by lowering peripheral natural killer cells activity, lymphoproliferation and immunoregulatory cytokine production of Th1 (IL-2, interferon-γ). Lipocalin-2 is known as neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin which is a member of the lipocalin family of proteins, which share a barrel-shaped tertiary structure with a hydrophobic pocket that can bind lipophilic molecules. In addition, lipocalin-2 is known to be related to insulin resistance, obesity and atherosclerotic diseases. Patients with psoriasis have a higher prevalence of obesity, hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases than health controls. |
