Abstract A high cost of energy and material has resulted in an increased effort aimed to produce more efficient heat exchanger equipments. Heat transfer augmentation techniques refer to different methods used to increase the rate of heat transfer without affecting much the overall performance of the system. Some of the applications of heat exchangers are in process industries, thermal power plants, air conditioning systems, nuclear reactors and chemical reactors, refrigerators, radiators for space vehicles, automobiles etc. these techniques for enhancing heat transfer are broadly of three types, passive, active and compound techniques. The present research is toward one of those passive augmentation techniques used in the recent past which are, twisted tape inserts. The present work studied numerically and experimentally the effect of using twisted tape insert on the heat transfer and pressure drop. Numerical work simulates the following cases; Flow inside horizontal plain tube, flow inside horizontal tube with single twisted tape inserts, flow inside horizontal tube with double twisted tape co-swirling flow, flow inside horizontal tube with double twisted tape counter swirling flow, flow inside horizontal tube with inserted tapes with clearance ratios, and vertical flows inside tube with different twisted tapes (up &downward flows). |
