Abstract The objective of this study was to determine the lipid profile, some antioxidant and enzyme activities in the seminal plasma of buffalo semen as well as in the blood serum and to correlate them with semen quality. The study was carried out on four buffalo bulls. Two successive ejaculates of semen were collected from each bull once a week for 5 successive weeks and were evaluated. Also, blood samples were collected from the same animals after semen collection. Cholesterol, phospholipids, triglycerides HDL, LDL and testosterone, antioxidants (SOD, GPx), ALT, AST and ALP were determined in both seminal plasma and blood serum of the animals. Results of the lipid components and testosterone, antioxidant and enzyme activities of the seminal plasma varied significantly between individuals. The cholesterol, phospholipids and triglycerides in the seminal plasma were correlated with semen parameters. Also, testosterone antioxidants and enzymes in the seminal plasma were correlated with semen characteristics. Highly significant correlations were calculated between the cholesterol/phospholipids ratio, LDL, SOD, testosterone and AST levels in the seminal plasma and those in the blood serum. |
