Abstract

The humidification–dehumidification desalination process (HDH) is a suitable choice for fresh water production when the demand is decentralized. HDH is a low temperature process where total required thermal energy can be obtained from solar energy. Capacity of HDH units is between conventional methods and solar stills. The construction of HDH unit can easily be performed using locally available materials. The operation of this unit is simple and requires no skilled person. It requires no hard maintenance and almost no operation and maintenance costs. Productivity of such HDH is medium. To enhance the productivity of HDH, various research works are being carried out. from the previous works, it has been observed that more studies on the effect of various types of forced air circulation on the performance of HDH is required. Also, the effect of cold to hot water ratio requires further stuudies. The aim of this research is to improve the performance of HDH is required. In this thesis, experimental and theoretical investigations of the effect of design and operational parameters variations on performance of HDH is presented. An important operational parameter is varying the temperature of saline feed water. The use of vacuum tube solar collector is also considered.
