Abstract Labor is an event with great physical, psychological, social and emotional meaning for the mother and her family. The woman has many experiences such as stress, physical pain and danger that may compromise the event. The philosophy of maternity nurse care is focused on the needs of individual and family for physical care as well as emotional and social support and active involvement of significant others according to cultural values and personal preferences. The quality of nursing care during the first stage of labor is mandatory to prevent and decrease maternal and neonatal complications associated with normal labor. In addition, the role of maternity nurse is vital in improving maternal and neonatal health. Nursing care during the first stage of labor focuses on maintaining physiologic stability, promoting comfort, facilitating return of women to normal activity levels, and supporting the establishment of sound relationship within the family. |
