Abstract

Cognitive impairment is one of the most frequent manifestation of multiple sclerosis. It might occur at any stage of the disease regardless its form and even before the incidence of the motor deficit, also in patients without any cognitive complaint. It causes role limitations in work and social life, independently of the degree of physical disability. The neurocognitive profile of MS varies considerably among patients with no general consensus exists on the special characteristics of cognitive dysfunction in MS patients, reflecting disease heterogeneity and demyelination of different areas of the CNS. While there is no single common pattern of neurocognitive impairment associated with MS, some cognitive domains are more frequently affected than others. The aim of this work is to study and assess the cognitive dysfunctions in multiple sclerosis. This study was conducted on 40 MS patients attended the Neuropsychiatry Department in Tanta University Hospital during the period from 1-7-2011 to 1-7-2013, and 20 healthy control subjects matched patients’ age, sex and educational level.
