Abstract

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the major causes of chronic hepatitis and liver disease worldwide. HCV infection leads to chronic hepatitis in about 80% of patients. Chronic hepatitis C frequently evolves to cirrhosis and a significant proportion of patients with liver cirrhosis (LC). (98)
Cellular immunity plays a critical role in the control of viral infection.
Interleukin-2 (IL-2) which is one of Th1 cytokines is synthesized and secreted by activated T-lymphocytes in the presence of macrophage.
The aim of the work is to study the effect of interferon therapy on interleukin2 in patients with hepatitis C virus diagnosed by PCR examination and received conventional interferon therapy.
The research was conducted on 80 adult individuals divided to 4groups, 10 healthy individuals (group I), 10 patients received liver support (group II), 10 patients treated with interferon before 12 week from injection of interferon |(group III ), 50 patients treated with interferon after12 week from injection of interferon (group IV).
There is highly significant difference (P<0.001) between control and the 3 patients groups
In our study , The mean sIL2 levels were significantly elevated in the 2 groups of patients ( patients treated with interferon before 12 week from injection of interferon(|group III ) and patients treated with interferon after12 week from injection of interferon (group IV) compared to normal control groups (group I) and patients received liver support (group II), (P<0.001), A trend towards progressive elevations of sIL-2 values occurred with the incre
