Abstract Infertility may be due to a variety of causes of which immunological factors probably play a role in about 5% of cases. This differ;; from other groups of patients suffering from infertility with no apparent cause explaining their inability to conceive despite exhaustive tests. This group is known as ”idiopathic infertility”. Immunological factors may affect any step in the reproductive process starting from gametogenesis up to formation of sperms and ova. They also can affect sperm function in mobility and capacitation by cervical mucus. Sensitization of the immune system may be due to exposure to a foreign antigen resulting in iso-immunization or self antigen resulting in auto-immunization. Both will subsequently result in formation of antibodies which interfere with the reproductive process. There have been many traditional methods for assessing sperm function, but recently new methods for detecting antibodies evolved facilitating the identification of the type of antibodies produced together with identification of its s;te on sperm surface. |
