Abstract

This thesis aimed to evaluate the efficiency of a locally available sugarcane bagasse activated carbon and orange peel wastes as low agricultural wastes to adsorb organic and inorganic pollutants from aqueous solution as alternative to existing commercial adsorbents.Carbon was produced from sugarcane bagasee and orange peel residues followed by activation using different activating agents such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, sodium alkali metal, and steam activation methods. The prepared activated carbon samples were characterized by SEM, FTIR, and Boehm titration, point of zero charge and nitrogenadsorption–desorption analysis.SBET of AC increases due to the activation process which modify the surface of the carbon. The SEM image of the activated carbons showed a large difference between the different samples which shows formation of pores on the carbon surface in comparison with the blocked surface of the carbonized (non activated sample).According to the surface chemistry of all samples, there is a large difference between all samples which agrees with the activation conditions for each sample. The removal of lead, iron and phenol were investigated using batch experiments by varying parameters (such as initial pH, temperature... etc) which may affect the adsorption capacity of ACs. The obtained data showed the high efficiency of the prepared activated carbon for the removal of these pollutants from water.
