Abstract

In this thesis, a refined formalization of the power differential protection scheme is proposed for transmission lines. The performance of the active and reactive power scheme is investigated using EMTP. Universality of the enhanced scheme algorithm is confirmed with different transmission line lengths, voltage levels and a wide variety of operating conditions. Then, the response of the developed power differential scheme is dynamically investigated under transient operating conditions. Sever power swing associated with large oscillation of rotor power angle is simulated. This is carried out by simulating two different power systems using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The first system consists of a synchronous generator connected via a transmission line to an infinite bus.The second system consists of two interconnected networks. The power differential scheme also extended to deal with multi-terminal lines as well. Finally, a hardware implementation of the proposed power differential scheme is structured with an advanced Digital Signal Processing ”DSP” implementation using the DS1003 board accompanied with multi-input/output board DS2201. This corroborates the validity of the dynamic performance of the proposed scheme.
