Abstract The Plain x Ray of the pleura has an important role in diagnosis of the majority of the diseases of the pleura such as pleural effusion, peneumothorax, hydropnemothorax and pleural tumor Although the sensitivity of CT in detecting pleural disease is widely accepted, however the specificity of CT has not been · established because only a few retrospective studies have compared CT and conventional radiography for the assessement of pleural disease. Despite limitations ofCT, it frequently provides precise anatomic localization of the pleura. CT is especially valuable in differentiation pleural from parenchymal lung disease especially in patients with complex pleuro parenchymal pathology. Additionally, the ability ofCT to differentiate among various tissue densities in selected cases can allow precise histologic characterization of lesions such as hemorrhagic effusions. Even in those cases in which a precise histologic diagnosis is impossible, CT can still play a vital role, for example, by aiding in the diagnosis of malignant pleural effusion by identifying the undetectable subpleural nodules or focal areas of nodular or irrigular pleural thickening. |
