Abstract The ovary of most mammals lies in a membranous pouch (bursa ovarica) which endorses the periovarian space. This communicates with the peritoneal cavity through a certain opening (Mossman and Duke, 1973 ). McLaughlin and Chiasson (I 979.,) reported that the mature rabbit ovaries are small in size and are frequently obscured by a mass of fat which should be carefully removed at dissection. They are situated some distance caudal to the kidneys, and each is suspended independently from the peritoneum by a short mesovarium. The ovaries of mature females occasionally show a spherical Graafian follicle and dark lumps or corpora lutea, which represent the sites of erupted eggs, as marked by McLaughlin and Chiasson (1978). The ovmy of rabbit was described by El-Azhary (1980) to exhibit a flattened almond-shape being attached to the mesovarium through its hilum. In mature rabbits, its size is 1/2-1 IS em in length and l/2 em in width. Its surface appears smooth with smooth translucent elevations of moderate size and number. According to C1aesson (1954) the two ovaries of the same animal are quite equal in weight. |
